My Dearest Creator,
There are some creations that feel like coming home. They carry the scent of old books, the comfort of a warm cup of tea, and the echo of gentle laughter. Today, we will weave one such soul into being: Grandma’s Crochet Caddy. She is more than a clever place to keep your pins; she is a tribute, a tiny matriarch for your creative space who watches over your work with a knowing smile.
Let's pick up our hooks and craft a piece of heirloom charm together. She is waiting to tell her story through your hands.
🎨 The Artisan's Vision: Why This Project is Special
This project is an act of weaving tenderness into a tangible, useful form. We are capturing the essence of the beloved grandmother—wise, gentle, and always supportive. She is designed not only to be beautiful but to be a true companion in your craft. Her stable base makes her a perfect pincushion, and her gentle gaze is a reminder of the love that is poured into every handmade item. She is functional art, a heartfelt gift for a fellow artisan, or a treasured addition to your own atelier.
✨ Skills You'll Master (And Why They Matter)
Every creation is a lesson from our muse. With this project, you will deepen your understanding of several key techniques:
- Amigurumi Shaping: You will practice precise increasing and decreasing to sculpt the elegant bust form, creating a stable base that flows naturally into the gentle curves of the head and shoulders. This control is the key to all character work.
- Textural Stitching: For the shawl, we will use stitches that create a rich, fabric-like texture, elevating the piece from a simple toy to a miniature garment. This adds depth and realism.
- Fine Detail & Embellishment: The true artistry shines in the details. You'll master the delicate art of surface crochet to form her spectacles, a technique that provides unmatched neatness and control for fine lines.

Rnd 42: [sc, dec] x 6 (12)
Rnd 43: [dec] x 6 (6). Fasten off, weave tail through final stitches and pull tight to close.
Arms (Make 2)
Start with Cream yarn.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x 3 (9)
Rnd 3: sc around (9). Change to Soft Pink yarn.
Rnds 4-9: sc around (9) - 6 rounds. Stuff lightly. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Shawl
Using Charcoal Grey yarn.
Row 1: Ch 31. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across (30). Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2-8: In BLO, hdc across (30). Ch 1, turn. Fasten off after Row 8, leaving a very long tail for sewing and wrapping.
Hair Cap & Bun
Using Bright White yarn. First, we create the cap.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
Rnd 2: [inc] x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)
Rnd 6: [4 sc, inc] x 6 (36)
Rnd 7: [5 sc, inc] x 6 (42)
Rnds 8-10: sc around (42). Do not fasten off. We now create the bun directly on the cap.
Bun Rnd 1: Working from the last stitch, ch 1, turn your work. We will now work back over the cap in a smaller circle. Find the center of the cap (around the original MR). We will work into the posts of the stitches of Rnd 3. Sl st to a stitch post on Rnd 3. Working around the center, [sc, inc] x 6 into the stitch posts of Rnds 2-3 (18). This is tricky, but creates a raised circle.
Bun Rnds 2-4: sc around (18)
Bun Rnd 5: [sc, dec] x 6 (12). Stuff the bun lightly.
Bun Rnd 6: [dec] x 6 (6). Fasten off, leaving a tail. Weave through final loops to close the bun. Use the tail to secure the bun tightly to the hair cap.
Walking Cane
Using Brown yarn.
Step 1: Ch 15. Fasten off, leaving tails at both ends.
Step 2: To create the handle, take the starting tail and weave it back down through the first 4 chains, pulling it tight to create a curve. Secure with a knot. Trim ends. You can add a drop of fabric glue to stiffen it if you wish.
🧵 The Final Flourish: Assembly & Embellishment
Here we breathe the final spark of life into our creation.
- Hair: Place the white hair cap onto the head, positioning it to your liking. Use the yarn tail from the bun to sew the cap securely all the way around the head.
- Arms: Sew the arms to the sides of the body, just below the neck line (the color change).
- Shawl: Drape the grey shawl around her shoulders, crossing it over in the front. Use the long yarn tail to sew it in place onto the body. You can wrap the tail around the torso once or twice to secure it snugly.
- Facial Features:
- Glasses: Using black embroidery thread and a yarn needle, carefully create the glasses using surface slip stitches. Use pins to mark out two circles around the eyes first as a guide. Add a small connecting bridge over the nose.
- Smile: With the same black thread, embroider a small, gentle smile a round or two below the eyes.
- Bow: With the Baby Pink yarn, create a small bow and sew it securely to the side of her hair bun.
- Cane: Tack the small walking cane to one of her hands.
