My dearest fellow crafter,
There is a special kind of magic in taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary, isn't there? In looking at the most humble corners of our homes and seeing a canvas for joy. Today, we're going to do just that. We are going to banish bathroom boredom and crochet a little friend who is not only charmingly silly but wonderfully useful.
This pattern, for the Potty Pal, is a celebration of that clever, whimsical spirit. It's a quick project, a flash of fun that proves a bit of yarn and a clever idea can bring a smile to anyone's face. Let's get our hooks ready and add a pop of personality where it's least expected!
🎨 A Touch of Joy for Your Home: The Project Vision
The goal here is simple: pure, unadulterated fun. We're creating a cover for a standard toilet paper roll that transforms it into a quirky character. With its nerdy glasses and goofy grin, the Potty Pal is a functional piece of art that serves as a hilarious conversation starter. It’s the perfect way to show that a handmade home is a home filled with love and laughter.
✨ Clever Crafting: Essential Skills & Tricks
This project is wonderfully straightforward, making it perfect for an adventurous beginner! The key skills involve creating a neat, flat panel with even tension, crocheting a few small appliqué pieces, and using a yarn needle for clean, tidy assembly. The final whip-stitched border is what gives it that polished, 'store-bought' look, so we'll pay special attention to that delightful finishing touch.
A crafter's secret: The truest measure of skill isn't complexity, but the care put into simple things. A neat stitch and a joyful spirit can build anything.

📖 The Blueprint: The Complete Potty Pal Holder Pattern
Main Body (Yarn A - Royal Blue)
The body is worked as a flat rectangle.
Row 1: Ch 61. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each ch across. (60 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2-22: Sc in each st across. (60 sts) Ch 1, turn.
At the end of Row 22, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the side seam later.
Glasses (Yarn B - Red)
We'll make two eye frames and join them.
First Eye Frame:
Rnd 1: Ch 18. Sl st to the first ch to form a ring, being careful not to twist it.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 24 sc evenly around the chain ring. Sl st to the first sc to join. (24 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each st around. (24 sts) Sl st to join. Fasten off.
Second Eye Frame:
Repeat Rnds 1-3 but DO NOT fasten off. We will now join them.
Joining: Ch 2. Sl st to any stitch on the first eye frame. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Bridge Detail: Using a small scrap of white yarn, stitch a small "X" over the 2-chain bridge.
Teeth (Yarn C - White, Make 7)
The teeth are tiny rectangles.
Row 1: Ch 5. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of the next 4 ch. (4 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2-3: Sc in each st across. (4 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
🧵 The Finishing Touches: Assembly & Details
Here is where your character truly comes to life! Take your time with this part.
- Attach Glasses & Eyes: Lay the blue rectangle flat. Position the red glasses in the upper-middle section. Pin them in place. Using the red yarn tail, sew the glasses securely onto the panel. Once the glasses are attached, insert the 12mm safety eyes through the blue panel in the center of each glasses frame. Secure the washers on the back.
- Attach Teeth: Arrange the 7 white teeth in a row along one of the long bottom edges of the blue panel. Pin them in place. Using the white yarn tails, sew the top edge of each tooth to the blue panel.
- Create the Tube: Fold the blue panel in half so the two short ends meet. Using the long blue tail you left earlier, whip stitch this seam closed to form a tube. Weave in the end.
- Decorative Edging: Using white yarn (Yarn C), whip stitch around both the top and bottom circular openings of the tube for a clean, decorative border. This final touch really makes the project pop!
Once all ends are woven in, simply slide your creation over a new roll of toilet paper and place it on the holder!
