📖 The Complete Fable the Wolf Pattern

Head (in Medium Grey)

Stuff the head firmly as you go.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Inc] x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc] x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc] x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc] x 6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6: [Sc 4, inc] x 6 (36 sts)
  • Rnd 7-12 (6 rounds): Sc in all 36 sts (36 sts)
  • Rnd 13: [Sc 4, dec] x 6 (30 sts)

Artisan's Note: Now is the perfect time to place the muzzle and eyes. The 'Gaze of Innocence' is key! I recommend placing the 8mm safety eyes between Rnds 10 and 11, about 6-7 stitches apart. The muzzle will be sewn on just below, centered between them.

  • Rnd 14: [Sc 3, dec] x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 15: [Sc 2, dec] x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 16: [Sc 1, dec] x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 17: [Dec] x 6 (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Finish stuffing the head firmly and weave the tail through the final 6 stitches, pulling tight to close the hole.

Muzzle (in Soft White)

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Inc] x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc] x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: Sc in all 18 sts (18 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Using the black scrap yarn, embroider a small "V" or triangle shape for the nose on the muzzle before attaching it to the head.

Ears (Make 2)

First, make the inner ear piece in Charcoal Grey.

  • Row 1: Ch 4. Starting from 2nd ch from hook, sc 3. Ch 1, turn. (3 sts)
  • Row 2: Dec, sc 1. Ch 1, turn. (2 sts)
  • Row 3: Dec. (1 st)

Fasten off. Now, make the outer ear in Medium Grey, following the same pattern, but DO NOT fasten off after Row 3. Place the charcoal piece on top of the grey piece and sc evenly around the entire edge to join them. Leave a tail for sewing.

Body (in Medium Grey)

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Inc] x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [Sc 1, inc] x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc] x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc] x 6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6-9 (4 rounds): Sc in all 30 sts (30 sts)
  • Rnd 10: [Sc 3, dec] x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 11: Sc in all 24 sts (24 sts)
  • Rnd 12: [Sc 2, dec] x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 13: Sc in all 18 sts (18 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a very long tail for sewing the head to the body. Stuff the body firmly.

Arms (Make 2, in Medium Grey)

  • Rnd 1: Start with 5 sc in a magic ring (5 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Inc] x 5 (10 sts)
  • Rnd 3-4 (2 rounds): Sc in all 10 sts (10 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [Sc 3, dec] x 2 (8 sts)
  • Rnd 6-7 (2 rounds): Sc in all 8 sts (8 sts)

Stuff the hand part lightly. Do not stuff the rest of the arm. Flatten the top opening and sc 4 across to close. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Legs (Make 2, in Medium Grey)

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Inc] x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3-5 (3 rounds): Sc in all 12 sts (12 sts)
  • Rnd 6: [Sc 2, dec] x 3 (9 sts)

Stuff lightly. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Tail (Start in Soft White)

  • Rnd 1: Start with 4 sc in a magic ring (4 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [Sc 1, inc] x 2 (6 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [Sc 2, inc] x 2 (8 sts)
  • Change color to Medium Grey.
  • Rnd 4: [Sc 3, inc] x 2 (10 sts)
  • Rnd 5-6 (2 rounds): Sc in all 10 sts (10 sts)
  • Rnd 7: [Sc 3, dec] x 2 (8 sts)

Stuff lightly. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

The Red Hood (in Deep Cranberry Red)

This piece is worked in rows to create the main hood, then in rounds to form the opening.

Artisan's Note: We will use Half Double Crochet (hdc) for the hood. This stitch is slightly taller than a single crochet, giving the hood a lovely, 'woven' texture that feels cozier, like a real miniature cloak.

  • Row 1: Ch 18. Starting from 3rd ch from hook, hdc 16. Ch 2, turn. (16 sts)
  • Row 2-10 (9 rows): Hdc in all 16 sts. Ch 2, turn. (16 sts)

At the end of Row 10, do not turn. Fold the piece in half so Row 1 and Row 10 are touching. Sl st through both layers across the 16 stitches to create the back seam of the hood. Do not fasten off.

Now, we will work in rounds around the bottom opening of the hood.

  • Rnd 1: Ch 1. Work 2 sc in the end of each hdc row. (Approx. 20 sc). Sl st to join.
  • Rnd 2-3 (2 rounds): Ch 1, sc in all sts around. Sl st to join.

Fasten off and weave in the end. For the drawstring, chain 40-50 stitches with Chocolate Brown yarn. Weave this chain in and out of the stitches of Rnd 1 of the hood opening. Tie a small bow.

🧵 Assembly & Final Touches

This is where your creation's personality truly comes to life. Take your time and pin pieces in place before sewing.

  1. Sew the Muzzle to the front of the Head, placing it just below the safety eyes. Add a little stuffing before closing the seam.
  2. Sew the Ears to the top of the Head, around Rnds 4-6 from the center ring.
  3. Using the long tail from the Body, sew the Head to the Body. Ensure it is centered and secure.
  4. Sew the Arms to the sides of the Body, just below the neck seam (around Rnd 12 of the body).
  5. Sew the Legs to the bottom of the Body, positioning them so Fable can sit sweetly on a shelf.
  6. Finally, sew the Tail to the back of the Body, around Rnds 6-8 from the bottom.

Place the Red Hood on Fable's head and tie the bow. Your fairytale wolf is now complete!

💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I sell the finished wolf I make from this pattern?
A: Absolutely, my dear creator! You are welcome to sell the finished creations you make from my patterns. I only ask that you credit Patricia Poltera as the designer and link back to this blog post. Please do not re-sell or distribute the pattern itself.

Q: My wolf's head is wobbly. How can I fix this?
A: A wobbly head is a common challenge! The key is twofold: stuff the top of the body and the base of the head very firmly, and be meticulous when sewing. Use the long yarn tail from the body and go around the 18 stitches of the neck opening twice, pulling snugly, to create a strong, stable connection.

Q: What is the best way to get the "Gaze of Innocence"?
A: This is my favorite part! The secret is to place the eyes *low* on the face. Resist the urge to place them in the middle of the head. By placing them lower (around Rnd 10-11) and close to the muzzle, you are invoking the 'baby schema' we discussed in our Aesthetic Compass, which creates that instant, heartfelt "aww" moment.

💌 A Final Word

It is my hope that crocheting Fable the Wolf has brought a little spark of storybook magic into your day. You have taken simple strands of yarn and woven them into a creature with a soul and a story to tell.

May this little wolf be a reminder of the innocent charm we can create with our own two hands. Happy crafting!
