🧶 Materials & Tools Needed

To weave this little creator, you will need to gather a few simple treasures from your collection.

  • Yarn: Worsted Weight (Category 4) or DK (Category 3) yarn. I find a cotton or cotton-blend yarn (like Scheepjes Catona) gives a wonderfully clean stitch definition.
    • Medium Grey (for the body, head, arms, and legs)
    • Soft Pink (for the inner ears, paws, and tail)
    • Muted Orange (for the nose)
    • Warm Brown (for the spoon)
    • Small amount of White (for eyes and tooth)
    • Small amount of Black (for eyes)
  • Hook: 2.5mm or 3.0mm crochet hook (choose a hook size that creates a tight, dense fabric so no stuffing shows through).
  • Other Materials: Polyester fiberfill stuffing, stitch marker, yarn needle (tapestry needle), scissors, and a small piece of white felt or stiffened fabric for the tooth (optional, can also be embroidered).

📖 The Complete Rémy, the Little Chef Mouse Pattern

The Head

We begin with the head, the very soul of the creation. We will work from the top down, creating the shape for his snout as we go. Use Medium Grey yarn.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times (18)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 6 times (24)
  • Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] 6 times (30)
  • Rnd 6: [4 sc, inc] 6 times (36)
  • Rnd 7-12: sc in all 36 stitches (36) (6 rounds)
  • Rnd 13: 12 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc, 12 sc (39)
  • Rnd 14: 12 sc, [sc, inc] 2 times, 4 sc, [inc, sc] 2 times, 13 sc (43)
  • Rnd 15-16: sc in all 43 stitches (43) (2 rounds)
  • Rnd 17: 13 sc, [sc, dec] 2 times, 3 sc, [dec, sc] 2 times, 13 sc (39)
  • Rnd 18: 13 sc, dec, 2 sc, dec, 3 sc, dec, 2 sc, dec, 10 sc (35)
  • Rnd 19: [5 sc, dec] 5 times (30)
  • Artisan's Note: Begin stuffing the head firmly. Pay close attention to shaping the snout area (the increases from Rnd 13-14) to give it that lovely, prominent curve. The Gaze of Innocence relies on this shaping!

  • Rnd 20: [3 sc, dec] 6 times (24)
  • Rnd 21: [2 sc, dec] 6 times (18)
  • Rnd 22: [sc, dec] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 23: [dec] 6 times (6)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Finish stuffing the head firmly. Weave the tail through the front loops of the final 6 stitches and pull tight to close. Hide the remaining tail inside the head.

The Body

With Medium Grey yarn.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12)

  • Rnd 22: [2 sc, dec] 6 times (18)

The Arms (Make 2)

Start with Soft Pink yarn (for the paws).

  • Rnd 1: Start with 5 sc in a mr (5)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 5 times (10)
  • Rnd 3: sc in all 10 stitches (10)
  • Rnd 4: Switch to Medium Grey yarn. [dec, 3 sc] 2 times (8)
  • Rnd 5-10: sc in all 8 stitches (8) (6 rounds)
  • Stuff the paw (pink part) lightly. Do not stuff the rest of the arm.

  • Rnd 11: Fold the arm flat and work 4 sc through both layers to close.
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

The Feet (Make 2)

Start with Soft Pink yarn.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times (18)
  • Rnd 4-5: sc in all 18 stitches (18) (2 rounds)
  • Rnd 6: [sc, dec] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 7: Switch to Medium Grey yarn. sc in all 12 stitches (12)
  • Rnd 8: [dec] 6 times (6)
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail. Stuff the foot firmly (pink part). Close the opening as you did for the head.

The Ears (Make 2 Outer, 2 Inner)

Outer Ear (Make 2 with Medium Grey):

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times (18)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] 6 times (24)
  • Rnd 5-6: sc in all 24 stitches (24) (2 rounds)
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Inner Ear (Make 2 with Soft Pink):

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 6 times (12)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 6 times (18)
  • Fasten off. Sew the inner pink circle onto the center of the grey outer ear circle. Do not stuff.

The Tail

With Soft Pink yarn.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 4 sc in a mr (4)
  • Rnd 2-25 (or desired length): sc in all 4 stitches (4)
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Do not stuff. You can insert a thin, flexible wire if you wish for it to be posable, but I prefer the soft, natural curve.

The Nose

With Muted Orange yarn.

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2: [sc, inc] 3 times (9)
  • Rnd 3: sc in all 9 stitches (9)
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff lightly.

The Spoon

With Warm Brown yarn. We will make two flat ovals and sew them together.

Spoon Head (Make 2):

  • Rnd 1: ch 6. Starting from 2nd ch from hook: inc, 3 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Working down the other side of the chain: 3 sc, inc in last ch (14)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] 2 times, 3 sc, [inc] 4 times, 3 sc, [inc] 2 times (22)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] 2 times, 3 sc, [sc, inc] 4 times, 3 sc, [sc, inc] 2 times (30)
  • Fasten off the first piece. Do not fasten off the second. Place the two ovals together and sc around the entire edge, joining them. Stuff lightly before you close.

Spoon Handle:

  • Rnd 1: Start with 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • Rnd 2-20 (or desired length): sc in all 6 stitches (6)
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail. Stuff firmly. Sew the handle to the base of the spoon head.

Artisan's Note: For a very stiff spoon handle, you can insert a wooden dowel or skewer (cut to size) inside the handle before stuffing and sewing it to the spoon head. This gives it the rigidity to stand tall.

🧵 Assembly & Final Touches

This is where our creation truly comes to life. Take your time with this stage; it is the most important part.

  1. Body & Head: Use the long tail from the body to sew the head to the top opening of the body (Rnd 23). Ensure it is centered and secure.
  2. Nose: Sew the orange nose to the very tip of the snout.
  3. Eyes: This is key to the *Gaze of Innocence*. The eyes are large and sit low on the face, just above the snout, on either side of the nose. I recommend embroidering them. First, create the large white oval shape. Then, add the brown (or black) pupil in the center. Finally, use a single strand of black to outline the top of the white, giving it definition.
  4. Ears: Pinch the base of the completed ear flat and sew it shut. Then, sew the ears to the top/sides of the head, around Rnd 7-8.
  5. Feet: Sew the feet to the base of the body, pointing forward, so he sits stably.
  6. Arms & Spoon: Sew the arms to the sides of the body, just below the neck. Position them so they are pointing forward. Then, place the spoon in his paws and use a few stitches of brown yarn (from the spoon) to secure the spoon handle to his paws.
  7. Tail: Sew the tail to the back of the body, near the bottom.
  8. Tooth: Cut a tiny rectangle from white felt and glue or sew it just under the nose, on the "lip" area of the snout. Alternatively, you can embroider this with a few vertical stitches of white yarn.

💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My spoon is too floppy. How can I make it stiffer? A: The best way is to insert a rigid support. A small wooden dowel, a piece of a wooden skewer, or even a tightly rolled piece of plastic canvas inserted into the handle before stuffing will work wonders. Sewing the two spoon-head ovals together also adds to the rigidity.

Q: What's the best way to get the eye expression right? A: Placement is everything. Adhere to *The Gaze of Innocence* principle: place them low on the face, close to the nose. I always "pin" the features in place with sewing pins before I sew them on. This allows you to step back and check the expression from all angles before committing.

Q: Can I use safety eyes instead of embroidering? A: Of course! If you choose to use safety eyes, I would recommend large (12mm-14mm) black eyes, and perhaps glue a piece of white felt behind them to create that signature wide-eyed look. Remember to place them low on the face!
