📖 The Complete Pip the Winter Penguin Pattern

The Head & Body

We begin with the main form. This piece is worked from the top of the head down, in one continuous, plump shape. Stuff firmly as you go.

Start with Light Cream yarn.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [inc] x6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: [2 sc, inc] x6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [3 sc, inc] x6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6: [4 sc, inc] x6 (36 sts)
  • Rnd 7: [5 sc, inc] x6 (42 sts)
  • Rnd 8: [6 sc, inc] x6 (48 sts)
  • Rnd 9-15: (7 rounds) sc in all 48 sts (48 sts)

Change to Charcoal Grey yarn.

  • Rnd 16-17: (2 rounds) sc in all 48 sts (48 sts)
  • Rnd 18: [7 sc, inc] x6 (54 sts)
  • Rnd 19-24: (6 rounds) sc in all 54 sts (54 sts)
  • Rnd 25: [7 sc, dec] x6 (48 sts)
  • Rnd 26: [6 sc, dec] x6 (42 sts)
  • Rnd 27: [5 sc, dec] x6 (36 sts)
  • Rnd 28: [4 sc, dec] x6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 29: [3 sc, dec] x6 (24 sts)

Artisan's Note: Begin stuffing the head and body. Be sure to stuff firmly to achieve that wonderful, plump egg-shape that forms the core of our 'Embrace of Softness' principle.

  • Rnd 30: [2 sc, dec] x6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 31: [sc, dec] x6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 32: [dec] x6 (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Use your yarn needle to weave the tail through the final 6 stitches and pull tight to close. Weave in the end.

The Tummy Panel

With Light Cream yarn.

  • Rnd 1: ch 7. Starting in 2nd ch from hook: inc, 4 sc, 4 sc in last ch. Working on other side of chain: 4 sc, inc in first ch (16 sts)
  • Rnd 2: 2 inc, 4 sc, [inc] x4, 4 sc, 2 inc (24 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [sc, inc] x2, 4 sc, [sc, inc] x4, 4 sc, [sc, inc] x2 (32 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Flippers (Make 2)

With Charcoal Grey yarn.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x3 (9 sts)
  • Rnd 3-5: (3 rounds) sc in all 9 sts (9 sts)
  • Rnd 6: [sc, dec] x3 (6 sts)

Do not stuff. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Feet (Make 2)

With Sunny Yellow yarn.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x3 (9 sts)
  • Rnd 3: sc in all 9 sts (9 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. A tiny bit of stuffing can be added, but it's not necessary.

Festive Hat

Start with Bright White yarn.

  • Rnd 1: ch 37. Being careful not to twist, sl st to first ch to form a ring.
  • Rnd 2-3: (2 rounds) hdc in all 36 ch (36 sts)

Change to Deep Holiday Red yarn.

  • Rnd 4: In back loops only, sc in all 36 sts (36 sts)
  • Rnd 5: [10 sc, dec] x3 (33 sts)
  • Rnd 6: sc in all 33 sts (33 sts)
  • Rnd 7: [9 sc, dec] x3 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 8: sc in all 30 sts (30 sts)
  • Rnd 9: [8 sc, dec] x3 (27 sts)
  • Rnd 10: [7 sc, dec] x3 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 11: [6 sc, dec] x3 (21 sts)
  • Rnd 12: [5 sc, dec] x3 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 13: [4 sc, dec] x3 (15 sts)
  • Rnd 14: [3 sc, dec] x3 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 15: [2 sc, dec] x3 (9 sts)
  • Rnd 16: [sc, dec] x3 (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a tail. Close the top as you did the body.

Pom-Pom (White): Make a small pom-pom and attach it to the tip of the hat.

Hat Ties (White): Cut two long strands of white yarn. Attach one to each side of the hat's brim. Make a small pom-pom for each tie end.

Fish Satchel

Fish (White):

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: [sc, inc] x3 (9 sts)
  • Rnd 3: [2 sc, inc] x3 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 4: [3 sc, inc] x3 (15 sts)
  • Rnd 5-7: (3 rounds) sc in all 15 sts (15 sts)
  • Rnd 8 (Tail Fin): ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sc, hdc, dc. Skip 2 sts on body, sl st in next. Repeat for second fin.

Fasten off. Lightly stuff the fish. With Red yarn, embroider 2-3 stripes and an eye.
Strap (Red): ch 40-50, long enough to go across the penguin's body. Sew one end to the fish's mouth and the other to its tail.

🧵 Assembly & Final Touches

Here is where we give Pip his wonderful personality. Take your time, my dear creator, as this final flourish is what breathes life into our work.

  1. Tummy Panel: Pin the Light Cream tummy panel to the front of the body, just below the "face" area. Use the long tail to sew it neatly in place.
  2. Face: This is the *Gaze of Innocence*.
    • Beak: With Sunny Yellow yarn, sew a small horizontal stitch (or a tiny V-shape) for the beak between Rnds 12-13, centered.
    • Eyes: With black embroidery floss, create two simple, happy, downward-curving lines for eyes, placed low and wide apart (around Rnds 11-12).
    • Cheeks: Use Blush Pink yarn to add a small "blush" circle under each eye.
  3. Flippers: Sew the flippers to the sides of the body, angled slightly upwards, around Rnd 17-18.
  4. Feet: Sew the feet to the bottom of the body, pointing forward.
  5. Hat: Place the hat on the head. You can sew it in place with a few stitches, or leave it removable. Use white yarn to embroider the "V" details on the red part of the hat.
  6. Satchel: Drape the fish satchel across Pip's body.

💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get my color changes so clean? A: The secret is to complete the final yarn-over of the stitch *before* the new color with your new yarn. This makes the new stitch perfectly clean. For the head/body, this will be the last stitch of Round 15.

Q: Can I sell the finished penguins I make? A: Absolutely! This pattern is a wonderful item for holiday markets or an Etsy shop. While you may sell your finished creations, I kindly ask that you credit Patricia Poltera as the designer and link back to this post. The pattern text and photos, however, are not to be redistributed.

Q: My penguin looks a bit different. Why? A: That is the joy of amigurumi! Every creation is a collaboration between the pattern, the yarn, and the artisan (you). Your unique tension and stuffing style will create a penguin that is uniquely yours. Embrace it!

💌 A Final Word
